Below are instructions on using the LaserScan
Hidden Camera Finder.
Please make sure you have a fresh (new) set of batteries installed and the battery cover is properly closed. To verify if the device is functioning properly simply turn the hidden camera finder on and look for two alternating / flashing red lights. This confirms the device is working, but does not mean a hidden camera has been located.
A quick background: The overall design and concept of the Lens Finder is to produce a special light that is reflected back and visible through the view finder and thus help in identifying hidden cameras. The first (and best) step is to take a look through our
hidden cameras to familiarize yourself with them and give yourself an idea of some common items hidden cameras are built into.
*Keep in mind someone could build their own camera system and thus they could be built into mostly anything (although the camera's electronics would still need some room so you can keep that in mind).
Most all of these camera systems use what we refer to as a pinhole lens camera. The actual camera lens is about the size of the end of a ballpoint pen (think TINY). The makers will use this to their advantage by putting a tiny hole in something (for example, a wall clock), then fill the hole on the back side with the super small camera, mount the electronics beside it... and you'd honestly never notice it, especially if you weren't looking for it!
This AC adapter points out the actual lens (notice how it's hidden in an area of the text where it blends in):
This photo of the inside back of our mantle clock will show you how the electronics are mounted inside of such a camera system:
Once you have an understanding that a hidden camera could be built into mostly anything, the Lens Finder helps you to scan a room to look for reflections that shouldn't be there. Here's a good video that helps show you:
(Keep in mind that a video is hard to produce showing what to look for- as the video camera used doesn't pick up as well as what you'll really see. In other words, you looking through the view finder will see a much cleaner image and an improved red dot!).
So, in short, you're really looking for a camera lens that shouldn't be there. Hopefully this provides some insight on how to begin a sweep of a room.
